WHAT IS SEMI PERMANENT MAKE-UP?

Semi-Permanent make up, also known as micro-pigmentation, is a revolutionary method of inserting small amounts of pigment into the dermal layer of the skin in order to enhance a woman's features. This state-of-the art procedure has been used by models, actors, and entertainers as a means of enhancing their appearance.

HOW IS THIS SEMI-PERMANENT AND NOT PERMANENT?

The semi-permanent make-up or semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo is called as such because its effects have extended life-spans, lasting between 12 months-5 years (this also depends on your skin type and lifestyle), period after which the make-up tattoo starts fading and you should ideally retouch every 12/18 months or let it fade away for good. This happens because the semi permanent make-up or semi permanent cosmetic tattoo is a procedure consisting in mechanically inserting pigments into the skin just under 2mm deep, pigments which are made of inorganic minerals that in time get absorbed by the superior layers of the dermis.

Instead, the permanent make-up or cosmetic tattoo is using the classical tattoo ink, the same one that is used in common tattoos. This ink is made out of pigments that contain heavy metals, iron oxides, metal salts and even plastics it is implanted into the skin 3.5mm deep.

WHO HAS SEMI PERMANENT MAKE-UP?

-People who have none or little time to apply or re-apply conventional make-up.

-People with none asymmetrical features, uneven eyebrows, and eyes too close together or too far apart for example.

-People with allergies to conventional make-up.

-Sports enthusiasts.

-Alopecia sufferers or cancer patients with no brows or lashes.

-Lack of definition to brows.

WHAT IS EXPECTED IN MICRO-PIGMENTATION? (SEMI PERMANENT)

Your first appointment with a practitioner should be a consultation to discuss your requirements and expectations from micropigmentation. Your practitioner should explain the treatment process and take notes on your medical history to make sure that there are no reasons why you shouldn’t undergo micropigmentation.
Make sure that you obtain as much information as necessary to enable you to make a fully informed decision about this procedure and whether it can achieve the results you’d like.

The procedure

On the day of treatment you would normally be asked to sign a consent form which means that you have understood the future benefits and possible risks associated with the procedure.

Photographs of the area to be treated may also be taken by the practitioner for a “before and after” comparison later.
Depending on the area being treated, and your tolerance of pain, an anaesthetic cream may be first applied to help minimise discomfort.
Once this has worked cosmetic pencil is applied to create a template for the procedure, you should make sure you are satisfied with the final shape before proceeding with treatment.

The selected pigments are blended and applied into the skin with a very fine needle via a small hand held electrical device.
The initial appointment should take  2/3 hours depending on the areas being treated and the skill/speed of the technician. There should always be one or in some cases two follow-up appointments, which should be included in the overall cost of the treatment. The follow-up appointments will take less time.

Repeat procedures

The most up-to-date form of treatment should mimic softly applied natural looking make-up and will therefore not last as long as the old style heavily applied permanent make-up.

It is not possible to determine the length of time the pigment will remain visible in the skin as each person varies, however it is recommended that treatments are re-applied when necessary to freshen the appearance; this may be anything from 6 - 18 months depending on individual preference and the initial colour chosen.

HOLIDAYS

You must aware your technician of any holidays.

You will need 4 weeks to let the skin recover and settle after your treatment before you go on holiday and you will also need 4 weeks after your holiday before you return for any additional treatments as the skin will be prone to bleeding which will mean the colour does not retain well enough in the skin.

If you turn up to the treatment with tanned skin you will be asked to rearrange the appointment, pay half of the cost for the treatment that day for wasting the technicians time and the deposit charge will not be refunded.

PRE CARE ADVISE FOR MICROPIGMENTATION

Semi Permanent cosmetic procedures normally require multiple treatment sessions. For best results, clients will be required to return for at least one touch up procedure between four and six weeks after the initial procedure. Be prepared for the colour intensity to be significantly sharper and darker immediately after the procedure. This will subside and become lighter as the tissue heals. This process can take up to 9 days.

Advice for all semi permanent cosmetic procedures;

*Please wear your normal makeup or come with no make up to your appointment on the day of the procedure.

*Do not take aspirin, Ibuprofen or any other medication unless discussed for 2 days before and 2 days after the procedure.

*Do not drink alcohol the night before your treatment.

*Since delicate skin or sensitive areas may be swollen or red, it is advised not to make social plans for the same day.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR YOU TO RECOVER

No recovery time is necessary, however treated areas will appear a little dark for a few days and subsequently exfoliate and lighten to a more natural looking shade, the second visit will be necessary to perfect the shape and deepen the colour.

In some instances, on delicate skin there may be swelling and or slight bruising, however you can return to work and normal activities immediately after a treatment.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF MICRO-PIGMENTATION

Permanent cosmetic procedures are of a skin invasive nature (as they are a form of cosmetic tattoo) and therefore you may experience some discomfort.  This may vary according to each individual's pain threshold and the skills of the technician performing the service. However, keep in mind that there are different methods available to help with pain management, including various topical anesthetics.

Your skin should return to normal relatively quickly as any side effects such as swelling or redness is generally mild.

Allergic reactions to permanent cosmetics are quite rare. You may request a skin sensitivity test in an invisible area beforehand to see how your skin responds. Some technicians routinely recommend a sensitivity test as part of the treatment.

Needles inserted too deeply in the skin can cause bleeding, spreading of pigments, and damage to hair follicles.

If proper hygiene and sterilization guidelines are followed, micro-pigmentation should be very safe with few risks.
It is advisable not to pick or rub the treated areas to minimize the risk of infection.

AFTERCARE ADVISE

It is very important that you follow the advice of your practitioner carefully after micro-pigmentation to reduce the risk of complications.

Post-treatment advice includes:

  • Avoid direct sunlight on the treated area.

  • Avoid sunbeds

  • Avoid swimming for several weeks.

  • Avoid any water contact on the treated area for 7 days

  • Do not pick peeling or any flaking skin.

  • Avoid wearing conventional make-up on the treated area for 7 days.

WHO CAN NOT HAVE SEMI PERMANENT

consultation is always provided before booking any treatment to double check everything medically is okay and to make sure you are the right candidate for semi permanent. As long as you are generally healthy and don’t have any skin disorders or infections in the area treated, there are few medical reasons why patients should not undergo this treatment.
Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding are recommended to not have the treatment. Insulin dependent diabetics and people with some heart conditions will also not be suitable for treatment. Please inform you practitioner of any medication you are taking, if in doubt seek medical advice.

If you are prone to keloid or hypertrophy scarring (red, angry, raised) you may develop scar tissue in the treated area. Please think this over if you have experienced this in the past.
